Owen Sound city council has endorsed two proposed residential developments planned in the city’s east side.
City council resolved at its meeting Monday to authorize conditional site plan approvals and agreements with developers for projects on 8th and 9th Avenues East that propose a combined 119 new units.
Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy says it’s his understanding most of the units will be purpose-built rentals.
“There’s a need for rental housing, and for new housing in general,” Boddy says. “We’ve seen a lot of new developers coming into the area that are working towards both rental and sale housing … this is all really good for the community.”
AWG Properties Inc. is proposing a two-phased, 96-unit residential development known as “Hedera” at 2261 9th Avenue East, just east of Odawa Heights.
A report by city planner Sabine Robart explains Phase 1 of the Hedera project includes the construction of 36 townhouse units split into nine buildings.
The second phase is a four-storey, 60-unit apartment building with some covered parking at a grade below the building.
The second development councillors green lighted on Monday is a three-storey, 23-unit apartment building at 1723 8th Avenue East.
The property where “Guindon Apartments” will be built is just west of Zehrs, at the former location of the M’Wikwedong Native Cultural Resource Centre.
A single storey building that was on the property has already been demolished and the lands are now vacant, according to a city staff report.
The Guindon Apartments proposal calls for 22 two-bedroom units and a single one-bedroom unit.
Construction is expected to get underway sometime next year for both projects.
