The annual Remembrance service in Wasaga Beach will look different this year due to the pandemic.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 457 from Stayner will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the town hall cenotaph on Sunday, Nov. 8, but the legion is asking that members of the public NOT attend due to rules regarding social gathering.
In an effort to support the legion, the Town will livestream the service on the Wasaga Beach Events Facebook page for people wishing to observe the ceremony virtually, starting at 11am.
Individuals wishing to have a wreath placed at the cenotaph during the service can leave the wreath with customer service staff at town hall during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. To order a wreath for placement at the cenotaph, contact the legion at 705-428-3809.
People wishing to spend time at the cenotaph can do so on their own during Veterans’ Week, Nov. 5 to 11, the legion says. Please remember to observe physical distancing. The cenotaph is on the east side of the town hall at 30 Lewis St.
See the Royal Canadian Legion website to learn more about the organization and the 2020 National Poppy Campaign.
Things will also look different at the Wasaga Beach Public Library this year with an in-person Remembrance Day gathering not possible due to physical distancing restrictions.
Still, leading up to Nov. 11, library visitors can fill out a “paper poppy” at the front desk and note on it who they will be remembering this year.
