A new replacement facility for the Kincardine District Senior School has been given the green light by the provincial government.
The Ministry of Education has approved a business case submitted by the Bluewater District School Board through the Capital Priorities Program for over $26.4-million in funding to build a new Grades 7 to 12 school in Kincardine.
The school board anticipates it will accommodate up to 881 students.
Huron-Bruce Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa Thompson was at Kincardine District Senior School on Thursday to tout the funding for the new facility.
“I have advocated for a new senior school in Kincardine for years because there is no denying that the current footprint is limited with respect to accommodating growth,” says Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson in a statement. “This investment also goes beyond bricks and mortar – our government is investing in a new senior school so we can provide students with access to modern classroom settings and the latest technology which will lead to new opportunities and lifelong success.”
The Bluewater District School Board has not provided any timelines regarding the new Kincardine school build yet, but says it will be communicated as details emerge.
Minister of Education Stephen Lecce posted a video on social media to congratulate Kincardine on the new school build and said he looks forward to seeing shovels in the ground “as soon as possible”.
He also thanked fellow Progressive Conservative MPP Thompson for her advocacy on this project.
Bluewater District School Board Chair and Trustee For Kincardine/Huron-Kinloss Jan Johnston says a replacement facility for the Kincardine District Senior School has been a long-standing top goal of hers.
“I am ecstatic to see this project come to fruition,” Johnstone says in a statement. “Thank you to the Ministry of Education for recognizing the need in Kincardine, and to our local MPP, our many community and municipal partners, board staff and trustees, parents/guardians, students, and others whose ongoing hard work and advocacy have made this a reality.”
