There will be no snap election in Canada as the Liberal minority government has survived a confidence vote, finding support from the New Democrats, Greens and independent MPs.
MPs in the House of Commons, both in-person and remotely, voted 180-146 to defeat a Conservative motion to create a new committee to probe the government’s pandemic spending and allegations of conflicts of interest — primarily the since-cancelled WE Charity contract to administer to the Canada Student Service Grant.
The Bloc Quebecois was the only party to vote with the Conservatives.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government had declared the committee vote a confidence motion. If the government did not find support from the majority of the house a general election could have been triggered.
After some uncertainty in the morning, it became clear the Liberal minority government would not fall as New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh announced his party “will not give Prime Minister Trudeau the election he’s looking for.”
