There have been plenty of emergency vehicles on Barrie’s waterfront this morning.
Around 8:15am, man was found lying face-down in the grass and having a seizure at the corner of Bayfield and Simcoe Streets.
Our News Director Laura Hampshire was driving her partner to work at the time, when she noticed a dog loose on a leash running in circles at the intersection, and then saw the man on the ground.
“I am First Aid and CPR trained, so I immediately stopped my vehicle, got out and provided care on the scene, while my partner and two other Good Samaritans watched the man’s dog and called 9-1-1,” Laura says, “The man’s dog is the real hero here.”
The man was going in and out of consciousness, but was breathing and sitting up a few minutes later.
Firefighters were the first to arrive and by that time, the man had gotten up and almost wandered into traffic, refusing help.
He had a huge gash on the side of his face from presumably hitting the pavement due to the seizure and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
Barrie Police were called in to supervise and a friend, identified by the man, showed up to take care of the dog, while he was treated, so Animal Control did not have to be called.
