Skate Canada Cancelled
Skate Canada International has been cancelled due to rising COVID-19 cases in Ontario.
The event was scheduled for the end of October in Ottawa.
The decision was made to scrap the competition in consultation with the City of Ottawa and the provincial government on Wednesday.
QMJHL Suspends 2 Divisions
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has suspended play in both of its Quebec-based divisions until at least October 28th due to COVID-19.
The league says continuing play in Quebec became almost impossible with six of 12 teams located in red zones, where organized sport is prohibited.
The league will continue play with 5 of 6 teams in the Maritimes Division.
The Moncton Wildcats will not play for now because of New Brunswick government restrictions in the area.
The Western Hockey League announced yesterday that their season will start January 8th.
The Ontario Hockey League has targeted December 1st to open the season.
Nixon Passes
A prominent name in local hockey circles has passed away.
Jim Nixon, a member of the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame died on Monday at age 91.
As a player, he played for the Collingwood Shipbuilders and won the league’s scoring championship a number of times.
As a player/coach he won an Ontario Championship with the Durham Huskies and later was the coach of the Hanover Barons, a longtime Jr C powerhouse, who beat Orangeville to win the Schmalz Cup in 1991.
