Ontario Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod says the Ontario Hockey League must take steps to limit the spread of COVID-19 in order to return.
Among the initiatives is eliminating physical contact between players.
The OHL announced earlier a desire to Return To Play for December 1st.
The league will not comment on the ongoing negotiations.
The statement from Minister MacLeod added to issues with the Canada-US border, COVID-19 hot spots in Ontario, the NHL altering their start date to January 1st at the earliest, the high number of coronavirus cases with the Quebec League’s return last weekend and multiple other factors, the potential of the OHL returning December 1st appear bleak.
NHL Draft
The OHL 2020 National Hockey League Entry Draft concluded yesterday.
27 Ontario Hockey League players were drafted over the course of 2 days.
Tyson Foerster of the Barrie Colts went in the 1st round to Philadelphia while Evan Vierling of the Colts was selected 127th by the New York Rangers
Barrie native Isaak Phillips, a defenceman for the Sudbury Wolves, was selected by Dallas 141st overall
No members of the Owen Sound Attack were selected over the two days of the National Hockey League Entry Draft
That marks the 2nd consecutive year the Attack have been blanked at the NHL Draft table and the first time in the 31 year histpry of the squad that they have been shutout in back to back years.
However, an Attack draft pick, Artem Shlaine, was selected by the New Jersey Devils 130th overall
Shlaine was taken by the Attack 56th overall in the 2019 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection but it appears he’ll be attending UConn to play for the Huskies.
Last year at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep, Shlaine led the team in scoring with 78 points in 46 games including 26 goals.
