Meaford council awarded the Memorial Park entrance road reconstruction contract to E.C. King Contracting for $269,000.
The project is scheduled to begin Oct. 26 and be completed within 12 working days. The upper campground will be closed during construction, but lower waterfront sites will remain open until Oct. 29.
The project was approved in 2024 but carried forward to this year. The scope of work was reduced to ensure vital road infrastructure could be completed this year without impacting park services in 2027.
The current tar-and-chip road has surpassed its useful life and is deteriorating quickly. It is estimated the road was last resurfaced in the 1980s and is failing due to high traffic volumes over the years.
The deteriorating road is causing issues for customers hauling trailers and RVs, as well as for cyclists. Additionally, the current road width presents challenges for pedestrians and cyclists sharing space with trucks and trailers entering the park.
The proposed road will be widened from 3.5 metres to 5.0 metres. It will also feature a painted edge line for visual identification. Two drainage culverts will be replaced, and conduit will be added for a future street-lighting project. New signs will outline speed limits and parking restrictions, and temporary speed bumps will be installed to control traffic flow.
