A 24-year-old Huron County man has been charged in relation to a theft investigation in Hanover.
Hanover Police say they were contacted yesterday about a “shoplifting theft” that occurred Monday at a business in the 800 block on 10th Street in the southern Grey County town.
“The investigation determined a male suspect had concealed over $200 worth of merchandise in a backpack before leaving the store without making any attempt to pay,” Hanover Police say in a release. “Store employees recovered the merchandise, and police later identified the suspect through the course of their investigation.”
Hanover Police say the male suspect was located within hours “riding a stolen bicycle taken from a local school earlier in the day.”
“He was arrested and found in possession of stolen merchandise from three other stores,” Hanover Police say.
The 24-year-old Gorrie man was charged with multiple counts of theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime and failure to comply with probation.
The accused was later released from custody with a future court date in Walkerton.
Police add the stolen bicycle was returned to its rightful owner, a 13-year-old boy.
“(He) was very thankful to have his bicycle back,” Hanover Police say.
