Meaford Fire Department is reminding everyone to be safe when using extension cords.
Earlier this week, they responded to a residence after receiving a report of smoke from the basement.
Firefighters were able to vent out the light smoke to find a burnt extension cord connected to a sump pump, and part of the plastic had melted.
The fire department says that extension cords are designed for temporary use and are not meant to replace permanent household wiring, and that such damage indicates that the electrical load was more current that the cord could safety handle.
They warn never to exceed the cord’s rated amperage or wattage, to always use a 3-pronged cord for grounded tools or appliances, and to not connect extension cords to power strips for additional reach or outlets.
Meaford Fire also says that if you have an extension cord that is damaged, discoloured, melted, becomes hot while in use, or smells like burning plastic to unplug it immediately and discontinue use.
