The 41st annual Neyaashiinigmiing Traditional Pow Wow returns to Cape Croker Park from Aug. 14 to 16.
On Aug. 14, family karaoke runs from 6 to 10 p.m., concluding with a drone show at 10 p.m.
On Aug. 15, two Grand Entries kick off the powwows at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a dinner break around 5 p.m. On Aug. 16, a final Grand Entry takes place at 12 p.m.
“We want everyone to come in and actually see what we do and how we celebrate,” says Pow Wow Coordinator Tracy Siegworth. “We are honoured to be able to do that, so being our 41st, it’s an honour.”
Nearly 40 vendors will be set up around the park offering crafts such as beaded earrings, clothing and paintings. Food vendors will also be on-site.
“At one point, the government took powwows away from us,” says Siegworth. “So when you see powwows advertised, that was us being able to celebrate again and bring our culture back, so a powwow is very important to us.”
Admission to the powwows is $5 for anyone aged 5 to 55, and is free for children 4 and under and adults 55 and older. Parking is by donation.
