Hanover council has decided to go ahead with sidewalk work as part of the East End Trail project.
The town says it follows several months of discussion and analysis.
Planned work includes concrete sidewalks between 22nd Avenue A and 24th Avenue, as well as a new parking lot within the Saugeen Cedar Heights West subdivision.
Consideration of the trail project set out with the goal of completing the east end trail loop. The town looked at a combination of sidewalks and a nature trail, and also contemplated one or the other.
The project has drawn significant public support and criticism.
Some residents didn’t want a nature trail along their properties, citing privacy and safety concerns, as well as having to pay for their own fences if desired.
Others didn’t want a natural habitat disturbed.
While others felt it would connect neighbourhoods and promote active living and tourism.
Last week, council decided on the option of subdivision sidewalks to connect the east end trail loop instead of more nature trail between roughly the dog park and the planned parking lot on 24th street.
