What a well-earned victory for the U13 Owen Sound Firefighters Girls Field Lacrosse Team, earning a Bronze Medal in the B Division at the OWFL Provincials in Waterloo this weekend.
The road to Provincials was anything but easy. Throughout the season, this team faced challenges head-on, demonstrating resilience, determination, and unwavering teamwork every step of the way.
Their Provincial journey began with an elimination game against Newmarket. Trailing 4-3 at halftime, the girls took a moment to regroup and came out with renewed energy and focus. Their hard work paid off as they scored seven second-half goals to secure an impressive 10-7 victory and advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinal matchup against Kawartha, the team found themselves down 4-1 at the half. Despite continuing to battle and rally throughout the game, they ultimately fell short in a hard-fought 7-3 loss, sending them to the bronze medal game.
The bronze medal game against Oakville was an unforgettable battle. Owen Sound came out strong, dominating the first half and building a 7-4 lead. Oakville responded with a determined comeback, scoring seven goals to force an 11-11 tie at the end of regulation.
After a brief break, the teams entered a four-minute sudden-victory overtime period. Oakville gained the initial possession, but Owen Sound's defense stood tall. Outstanding saves kept the team alive and allowed the girls to regain possession. Then, with just 2:17 remaining in overtime, the team regained possession, sealing a thrilling 12-11 victory and the bronze medal for Owen Sound!
While the medal is an incredible achievement, the true success of this season lies in the resilience, teamwork, dedication, and heart shown by every player. These athletes never stopped believing in one another and earned this result through hard work and perseverance.
