The Town of Saugeen Shores, in partnership with Wilson Developments and Habitat for Humanity Grey-Bruce, broke ground on a new affordable housing development.
The development at Concession 10 — near Highway 21 — will feature 28 below-market homes aimed at serving low- and moderate-income households in a location convenient to essential services and future community infrastructure projects.
Of these, 21 units will be sold by Wilson Developments at below-market pricing, five units will be transferred to Habitat for Humanity to be sold through its attainable and affordable home-ownership program, and two units will be transferred to the town to support ongoing efforts to increase the affordable housing supply.
“This project reflects Council’s continued commitment to affordable housing for residents of Saugeen Shores,” says Town Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “By working together with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce and Wilson Developments, we are creating new opportunities for individuals and families to put down roots in our community. Through these strong partnerships, we are taking meaningful action to ensure Saugeen Shores remains a place where everyone can find a place to call home.”
Charbonneau, town council members, and representatives from Wilson Developments and Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce gathered Monday at the site to mark the official start of construction.
The project continues efforts to diversify the local housing supply while supporting the needs of the growing community, a key pillar of the town’s strategic plan.
“Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is thrilled to be partnering with the Town of Saugeen Shores and Wilson Developments to provide attainable and affordable housing in Port Elgin,” says Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce Greg Fryer. “It is only through partnerships like this, with the support of our donors and all those who stand with us, can the challenge of housing affordability be overcome. Our hope is that this model will be replicated not only throughout Grey and Bruce and but across Ontario.”
Following the beginning of the development, pre-sales for select below-market units are underway. Eligible home-buyers are encouraged to explore this unique opportunity to enter the housing market at an attainable price point through a program designed to support affordable home-ownership and long-term housing stability.
