Construction on a new playground and revamped splash pad at Kelso Beach at Nawash Park could start as soon as September.
The city’s community services committee passed a motion during its June 24 meeting to recommend council move ahead with detailed design and tendering the project.
It will include the replacement of the 25-year-old playground, and the revitalization of the existing splash pad. A new pathway network and additional seating — such as benches and picnic tables — will also be installed. Some site grading and tree planting in areas near the playground and splash pad are also part of the project, to increase access to shade.
A staff report says the playground will be completely replaced with new elements, including structures, swings and climbers. The splash pad revamp will include the installation of two new features, and painting existing ones to create an integrated theme with the new playground.
In all, it’s expected to cost around $638,000. The city is covering $354,000, and the Scenic City Order of Good Cheer will contribute $284,000.
The locations of the playground and splash pad at Kelso Beach at Nawash Park will remain the same.
A recent online survey conducted by the city seeking feedback on the Kelso Beach at Nawash Park playground and splash pad project generated 200 responses.
Owen Sound’s Manager of Parks and Open Space Eckhard Pastrik says maintaining the locations of existing amenities — playground, splash pad and washroom — in the new design was a key takeaway.
Shade, seating and age-inclusive play were also identified as priorities.
“These takeaways clearly expressed a desire for a revitalization approach that builds on the strength of the existing playground and splash pad, and supporting existing amenities,” Pastrik says.
Pastrik says the project will go to tender in July, and construction is expected to start by early September.
Council still needs to formally approve the committee recommendation.
Community Services Committee Member and Coun. Travis Dodd: “It’s going to be nice to see this in full use, and back to be that playground we all remember as kids. I think this is going to be a great addition for the community. And thank you to the Scenic City Order of Good Cheer for being part of this project, because we wouldn’t be able to be here if it wasn’t for them.”
