Hanover firefighters responded to a non-suspicious vehicle fire Saturday.
They say at about 5 p.m. on Saturday June 20th, they were called to a vehicle fire in the parking lot of the LCBO on 10th Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a gas-powered SUV fully engulfed in flames. Eighteen firefighters responded. They say the fire caused minimal heat damage to a second vehicle parked nearby, and damage to a window at the LCBO building. No injuries were reported.
Fire investigators say the cause of the fire is undetermined, but the incident has been deemed not suspicious.
They note, vehicle fires can grow and spread faster than most people expect.
A standard portable fire extinguisher is designed for small, contained fires, not a fire that has already taken hold under the hood or inside a vehicle.
Firefighters say, if your vehicle catches fire:
– Get yourself and others a safe distance away first
– Call 911 immediately
– Do not attempt to fight a vehicle fire that is already well established
– Stay back and let trained crews handle it, vehicle fires can involve hidden hazards like fuel systems, airbags, and battery components
They add, “The safest thing to do during any vehicle fire is to get clear and call for help, our crews train for these calls so the public doesn’t have to take that risk.”
