The Saugeen Ojibway Nation Environment Office is holding an event to mark Indigenous People’s Day.
This Sunday, June 21st, the Environment Office, in partnership with Parks Canada, will be hosting Paswewe De: Echoes of the Heartbeat for Indigenous People’s Day.
They will be pausing tours to Flowerpot Island and holding ceremonies across the islands surrounding Tobermory for Neyaashiinigmiing and Saugeen First Nation members.
The Environment Office says in a release, “The event is a powerful cultural experience for SON members attending the event.” SON members can expect drumming and a community feast followed by guided tours for members across Flowerpot and the surrounding islands.
They are inviting Parks Canada staff and members of the public are invited to join them at Mermaid Cove from 11:30a.m. to 12:30 p.m. where SON leadership will give a brief address and then a big drum will lead one of the ceremonies happening throughout the day.
They say, “From the Cove, many islands will be visible, and the echoes of the drums will travel across the waters.”
Limited parking is available at 96 Grant Watson Drive, Tobermory.
Janet Galant, Senior Manager of the SON Environment Office says in a statement, “Flowerpot Island holds significant meaning to our People. It is deeply sacred and we are excited to undertake the activities we have planned, especially with the event coinciding with National Indigenous Peoples Day.”
