Brockton council is supportive of establishing a veterans’ crosswalk in Walkerton.
Council passed a motion at its meeting Tuesday to support a proposal from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102 to establish a commemorative crosswalk that “would serve as a visible and lasting tribute to the service and sacrifices of our veterans, while also promoting awareness and remembrance among residents and visitors.”
The Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary is coming up next month, on July 17. Legion branches across the country are putting together special events or projects to mark the occasion.
“In recognition of this important occasion, our branch would like to explore the possibility of partnering with (Brockton) to establish a veterans’ crosswalk within the community,” Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102 President Jake Lantz says in a letter to the municipality.
Brockton Deputy Mayor Kym Hutcheon notes council previously identified the intersection of McNab and Durham Streets in Walkerton as an ideal location for such a crosswalk.
“I think it’s a great idea and we should support it … there’s construction planned for that area still, so it would have to be done at a later date,” Hutcheon says.
A staff report will be brought back to Brockton council with more information on the veterans’ crosswalk project, following consultation with the legion branch.
