There were no injuries in a fire in downtown Chesley yesterday.
Arran-Elderslie Fire Chief Steve Tiernan says firefighters from the Chesley and Paisley stations responded to a roof fire at a mixed-use building on 1st Avenue South β near Riverside Drive β in Chesley just prior to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Tiernan says heat from a wire contacting a hydro line in the roof structure sparked a blaze, which firefighters had under control quickly.
βIt was real fast work by crews to get up there, and get the roof pulled back to get water on it right away,β Tiernan says.
The Hanover Fire Department also supported the response, sending an aerial apparatus truck.
There were no injuries reported.
The building where the roof caught fire is mixed-use, with commercial space at ground level and apartment units above. It suffered minimal damage in the roof area.
Tiernan says seven connected buildings in close proximity to the blaze had to be temporarily evacuated during the emergency response, but everyone was cleared to return inside within a few hours.
Electricity was cut to the buildings as well during the fire response. Power remains out this morning, but hydro crews are working to get it restored.
