OPP are warning of two particular scams currently impacting residents province-wide.
One is the contractor/paving scam – police say the scammers go door to door offering driveway paving, roof repair or other home improvement projects – the offers are usually coupled with a limited one day only deal.
Another is the “Dirty Oil” vehicle scam – this one’s elaborate – suspects pose as potential buyers viewing a vehicle – it’s a two person job in that while one is discussing price and distracting the seller, the other places oil in the engine compartment, tailpipe, or other areas. When the vehicle is started or driven, the oil creates smoke and the appearance of serious mechanical failure. Then the supposed buyer feels confident in offering far less than the asking price.
