Meaford council has approved starting formal discussions and negotiations with Ontario Provincial Police for the potential development of a new OPP detachment.
A property along Highway 26 near Muir Street that was recently purchased by the municipality is the likely spot for the new station.
A staff report projects the cost of the facility would be approximately $20-million, as the OPP looks to add more strategic coverage around Grey Bruce.
The new detachment would expand the number of officers in Meaford to a projected 18.
The size of the building, a planned 17,500 square feet, would also allow the station to house specialized equipment, including snowmobiles and boats.
