The Municipality of Kincardine is announcing the installation of a Smart Beach Light at Station Beach for the upcoming season.
It’s part of the Smart Beach Program, which is an initiative aimed at improving beach safety through real-time monitoring, technology, and public education.
The installation of the light is planned for Friday, May 15th near the pedestrian access to Station Beach.
The lighted sign will then undergo two weeks of calibration while connected to nearshore modelling technology. The sign will be covered, or clearly marked as “Testing in Progress” during that time.
The solar-powered flashboard will display whether the water is safe based on wave conditions, wind, and currents, will be conveyed through a system like a traffic light: red for high hazard, yellow for medium, and green for low hazard.
The municipality says that beach users will be encouraged to check the sign regularly throughout their beach stay, as conditions can change quickly. Beach users are responsible for their own personal safety at all times, and should note that ‘Low Hazard’ does not mean ‘No Hazard’.
Smart Beach is a research and innovation program focused on improving beach safety through real-time monitoring, predictive modelling, and public education. The program brings together municipalities, researchers, and technology partners to better understand and respond to surf-related hazards in Great Lakes communities.
