A significant boundary adjustment between the Town of Hanover and the Municipality of West Grey is now in effect following a provincial ministerial order announced May 1, 2026.
The order transfers just over 1,600 acres of land from West Grey to Hanover, a move local and provincial leaders say will help unlock long-term economic growth in southwest Grey County.
The announcement was made alongside Ontario’s Minister of Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson, as well as municipal leaders and regional representatives.
Officials say the boundary adjustment will help attract investment, create jobs, and expand housing opportunities. The lands are strategically located near existing municipal servicing and designated settlement areas, making them well-suited for future development.
At the same time, agricultural use of the land can continue, and any future development will be required to follow local and provincial planning policies.
Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson says “Our region is an attractive place to live and do business. The Hanover area has tremendous pressure to grow, but a lack of available land for development has stalled major progress. Thanks to forward-looking collaboration with West Grey, we achieved a mutually beneficial agreement that can help unlock the economic power of this area for the benefit of Grey County residents and businesses for generations.”
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles added, “This ministerial order is a strong step forward for West Grey, Hanover, and southwest Grey County. It reflects real collaboration and sets the stage for long-term growth — supporting future housing, jobs and investment while ensuring a smooth transition for affected property owners.”
Grey County Warden Andrea Matrosovs also praised the collaboration, noting it lays the foundation for responsible growth and regional prosperity.
Officials describe the agreement as a historic and cooperative effort that positions the region for sustainable development and economic success in the years ahead.
More information on the transition for affected properties is available through the Town of Hanover.
