A new student-created mural focused on climate awareness and biodiversity is now on display at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre.
The piece, titled Our Home Ontario, was unveiled Saturday and created by Walkerton District Community School student Leopold Baker, with support from fellow students Scarlett Thornton and Reece Collins, through the Bluewater District School Board.
The mural features a wide range of endangered and threatened species found across Ontario, including the snapping turtle, red-headed woodpecker, and butternut tree, along with other animals and plant life. Some species were selected based on their connection to the local area surrounding the education centre.
The project was made possible through a Youth Climate Action Fund grant, with the goal of raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging action among youth.
The mural was previously displayed in Wiarton and showcased at a regional youth climate conference before being permanently installed in the centre’s Bruce Power Environmental Learning Classroom Building.
With thousands of students visiting the facility each year, organizers say the artwork will serve as a lasting reminder of the importance of protecting Ontario’s ecosystems and the role individuals can play in supporting the environment.
