A new coordinated approach to addressing homelessness and encampments has been introduced in Bruce County.
The Homelessness and Encampment Response Protocol was developed collaboratively by the County, local municipalities, emergency services, and community partners. It is designed to guide how agencies respond to encampments while prioritizing safety, dignity, and consistency for those experiencing homelessness.
The protocol outlines a number of key actions, including coordinating responses to encampments, improving safety for individuals and the broader community, and connecting people with available housing and support services.
It also clarifies roles and responsibilities among municipal staff, emergency responders, and service providers, while supporting more consistent communication and decision-making across agencies.
Luke Charbonneau says the initiative is about ensuring the community is ready to respond when people need help, and about building pathways to long-term housing stability.
Officials note that homelessness is a complex issue requiring collaboration across multiple sectors, and say the protocol is one step in ongoing efforts to develop lasting local solutions.
Residents looking for support or concerned about someone experiencing homelessness can contact local services, including 211 Ontario, YMCA outreach programs, or Bruce County Human Services.
