The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has announced the passing of its beloved groundhog weather predictor, Wiarton Willie.
Town officials say Willie passed away peacefully in their sleep.
The famous groundhog served as the centrepiece of the annual Wiarton Willie Festival, a long-standing Groundhog Day tradition that has brought visitors to Wiarton for more than 70 years.
Each February, Willie would make a prediction about the arrival of spring, drawing crowds of residents and tourists eager to see the iconic local mascot.
Mayor Jay Kirkland says the festival has been a cherished part of the community for decades, bringing joy to residents and visitors alike.
Officials say Willie helped put Wiarton on the map and created lasting memories for thousands of people who attended the event over the years.
The Town says it will begin the search for a new weather prognosticator in the coming days to continue the tradition.
