The Town of Saugeen Shores starting this spring, resurfacing work will get underway on Highway 21.
People who want to know more about the project can attend a meeting on March 17th, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Southampton Town Hall.
Resurfacing is planned for about 5.5km from just north of South Street to just south of Craig Street in Southampton.
The Town says work will include asphalt resurfacing, and some underground infrastructure upgrades like improvements to the water system within the right-of-way north of the Saugeen River. The plan is to have the work start in the spring and completed in the fall.
The Town notes, the project is designed to extend the life of the road infrastructure, improve driving conditions and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
Funding for the work is coming through the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) Connecting Links Program.
The Town says it recognizes Highway 21 is an important corridor through the community and it’s taking steps to minimize disruptions. They say most of the work mill and overlay resurfacing, which the Town says can usually be completed with alternating lane closures and minimal detours. To minimize disruption to businesses, no resurfacing will be done in the Palmerston Street to Lansdowne Street blocks during July and August.
They say the 2026 project area for High Street Reconstruction (west of Huron Street) is a much smaller area than the 2025 project and that work is expected to be done by the end of June. The town notes High Street’s timeline will not be impacted by the Highway 21 resurfacing project.
