Saugeen Conservation has issued a flood warning for all municipalities within the Saugeen watershed, effective through Monday morning.
Officials say recent mild temperatures have made the snowpack dense and less able to absorb additional moisture, while freezing rain expected this week could weaken river ice. The primary concern is the potential for ice movement and ice jams, which can cause water levels to rise quickly and result in localized flooding.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a freezing rain warning, with five to ten millimetres of ice accumulation possible. While significant runoff is not expected, rising water levels and shifting ice may still create hazardous conditions.
Municipal staff are being asked to monitor known ice jam locations, bridges, culverts, drainage systems, and low-lying roads.
Residents are reminded to keep a safe distance from all watercourses, as fast-moving water, unstable ice, and slippery banks can pose serious risks.
The advisory remains in effect until Monday at 9 a.m. unless updated.
