Kieron Walton scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, as the Peterborough Petes clipped the Owen Sound Attack 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday evening at Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Walton drifted his way around the offensive zone before letting a wrist shot rip from the high slot that beat Matthew Koprowski high to give the Petes the victory just 35 seconds before the end of overtime.
“Give time and space to Walton and he’ll make you pay,” says Attack Head Coach Scott Wray. “But we had our chances in overtime … our team played resilient tonight.”
Leon Kolarik also scored for the Petes (28-19-1-2), which took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Cole Zurawski and Pierce Mbuyi had the goals for the Attack (20-24-2-3).
Zurawski staked the Attack to a 1-0 lead 10:38 into the first period, taking a back door pass from Jake Crawford and getting just enough of the puck to get it past Easton Rye and the goal line.
But the Petes would respond with a pair of power play goals. First it was Walton at 14:31 to tie the game 1-1. And then Attack defenceman Lenny Greenberg was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for a check to head in front of the Owen Sound goal – a play that didn’t appear intentional as he caught Francis Parrish high trying to prevent him from cutting back to the net.
It took them nearly the full five minutes – but the Petes did break through with another power play goal. Kolarik put a one-time shot past Koprowski with 26 seconds left in the first period to give Peterborough a 2-1 lead.
That’s how it stayed until the third. And then another five minute power play came – this time for the Attack. Braydon McCallum was given a match penalty and game misconduct for a slash that caught Attack defenceman John Banks up high.
Mbuyi blasted a one-timer home with 5:19 remaining in the third to tie the game 2-2.
Rye made 36 saves in the win, while Koprowski stopped 31 taking the loss. The Attack outshot the Petes 38-34 while going 1 for 5 on the power play; Peterborough was 2 for 5.
Owen Sound’s three-game eastern trip continues Friday night in Kingston.
