The Hanover Police Service is investigating several reports of counterfeit $100 bills passed in the last week within the Town of Hanover.
Police investigators are collaborating with neighbouring police services who have similar reports and ongoing investigations.
Police are asking everyone accepting $100 bills to be extra vigilant.
Retail store owners, convenience stores, restaurants offering takeout and drive through food orders, alcohol and cannabis stores and gas stations are often most susceptible to receiving counterfeit money.
Police are encouraging businesses to educate their employees who are customer facing and work point of sale positions.
Counterfeit notes may display one or more of the following indicators:
– Repeated serial numbers appearing on multiple banknotes
– Wording such as “Prop Money”, “For Motion Picture Use” or other non-standard or foreign text, particularly within the holographic strip or elsewhere on the note
– A holographic strip that appears to be a removable sticker or is taped into the transparent window or indicates the incorrect value
– Dull, uneven, or peeling colours and poor print quality
– A noticeable difference in thickness or texture compared to genuine Canadian polymer banknotes
Anyone with information related to these investigations is asked to contact the Hanover Police Service or Crimestoppers of Grey Bruce at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
