The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority is warning of the potential for frazil ice in West Grey.
The authority issued a flood outlook statement on Tuesday saying there is the potential for frazil ice formation in the Main Saugeen River upstream of Durham.
This comes ahead of cold air temperatures anticipated over the next week with daytime highs between -5 degrees and -20 degrees as well as nighttime lows between -15 degrees and -27 degrees.
The authority says the exposure of the water to cold air temperatures can trigger the formation of frazil ice.
Frazil ice can block water flow causing flooding.
“Saugeen Conservation and Municipality of West Grey staff are working together to prioritize public safety, with Saugeen Conservation actively communicating flood forecasting information to municipal staff. As part of these efforts, municipal staff are encouraged to remain prepared to respond should conditions require action,” the authority says in the statement.
The authority will be monitoring the situation and will provide updates when needed.
This statement remains in effect until Jan. 21 at 4:30 p.m.
