The Hepworth-Shallow Lake Royal Canadian Legion branch is temporarily closed, and won’t re-open until its has a new executive in place.
Bayshore News reviewed a letter from the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion confirming the development.
The letter signed by the Legion’s Ontario Command Executive Director Pamela Sweeny says the action to suspend powers of the Hepworth-Shallow Lake Branch is because its executive resigned.
Two trustees have been appointed to “preserve all property and administer the affairs of the branch for the designated period of time.”
The trustees appointed to handle the local legion branch affairs are Rob Butchart and Steve Rice.
All events at the legion, including a New Year’s dance, have been cancelled. The trustees are working to provide refunds to those affected.
According to a social media post by Butchart, elections for all positions at the Hepworth-Shallow Lake Legion Branch No. 586 will be held on Jan. 7, 2026.
The Hepworth-Shallow Lake legion held a grand opening for its new building just over a year ago. The old branch building was completely destroyed — along with the memorabilia from the Grey Bruce Music Hall of Fame — in a January 2022 fire.
