Habitat For Humanity Grey Bruce is inviting students from across the region to take part in its annual writing contest.
The contest, which opens Jan. 5 for students in Grade four to six, asks them to share what home means to them.
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce Partnerships Manager Lisa Campbell says, “It’s a creative writing contest where you can write 50 to 300 words, its either a poem or a short story or something about what home means to the student that is writing. It can be submitted in English or French.”
She adds parents and teachers can sign up their children and students to take part.
Students taking part across the country will have the chance to win a $30,000 grant to help their local Habitat For Humanity build an affordable home for a family in need.
On top of the $30,000 grant, the three grand prize winners from across Canada will each receive an iPad and a pizza party for their class.
The nine runner-ups will each be awarded a $10,000 grant for their local Habitat for Humanity, an iPad, and a class pizza party.
“It’s my favourite campaign of all because it engages students, it engages children in understanding the need for affordable housing, it gets them giving community service back without any donations or requests from mom and dad to make a donation. They are making an incredible difference just simply by sharing their skills,” says Campbell.
Students from both the Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board are invited to take part as every entry earns a $10 donation for Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce, which go directly to constructing local affordable homes.
Those interested in taking part can email the local Habitat for Humanity lisa@habitatgreybruce.ca for more details.
Submissions will be accepted online here between Jan. 5 and Feb. 20. The winners will be announced in May.
