Dufferin OPP are warning people about scam text messages that are going around.
Police say the messages falsely claim the recipient were caught on a speed camera and need to pay a fine.
In at least one situation, the person was also sent a link to supposedly pay a $12 fine.
The victim paid the “fine” before realizing it was a scam when the fraudsters tried to withdraw $750 from the card.
Police say fortunately, the suspicious transaction was detected by the credit card company and cancelled.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud is encouraged to contact police and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
