Huron County council is directing staff to draft a letter to the province to voice concerns about the consolidation of local conservation authorities.
The motion was put forward in a report from Planning and Development Director Sandra Weber.
The proposed consolidation, outlined in Bill 68 – the Plan to Protect Ontario Act, would combine the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority with Ausable Bayfield, Saugeen Valley, Grey Sauble, Nottawasaga, Lake Simcoe Region, and Lakehead region.
Overall, Bill 68 would move to combine 36 existing conservation authorities into 7 regional bodies.
Several members of county council voiced their concerns, saying that they felt that the local conservation voice would be lost, and that it would take a particular toll on voices from rural Ontario.
The proposed Act was introduced on November 6th.
