Bruce Power’s set to conduct a large-scale emergency preparedness exercise this week.
It’s called Huron Unity and will bring together Emergency Management Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, law enforcement, first responders, health-care providers and local municipal officials.
The exercise at Bruce Power’s Tiverton site will take place Tuesday through Thursday (Nov. 18-20). According to a release from the nuclear power company, Huron Unity will test communication and collaboration across all levels of response, to ensure emergency plans work effectively.
“Safety is Bruce Power’s number one value,” Bruce Power Senior Vice President of Operational Services and Business Development Jennifer Edey says in a statement. “These exercises allow us to work closely with community partners and external stakeholders to make sure everyone knows their role as we continue to keep our people, our site, and our communities safe.”
The company says the scenarios in Huron Unity are “designed to challenge participants and validate emergency plans.”
“Such events are extremely unlikely because of robust safety systems and plans, but these exercises provide valuable opportunities to strengthen resilience and ensure co-ordinated efforts with partners,” a release from Bruce Power explains.
Bruce Power conducts major preparedness exercises every few years.
