Over 300 students from across Grey Bruce took part in the Nuclear Innovation Institute’s new trades event to learn more about the field.
The NII’s event, geared towards young women between Grades seven and 12 from both the Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board, allowed them to get hands on experience in various trades.
Students were able to cut sheet metal, change tires, style hair, and try out virtual welding skills at the NII’s Advance Technology Campus in Tiverton earlier this month.
The attending students also participated in an open house to explore interactive demonstrations and speak with industry representatives.
NII President and CEO Jessica Linthorne says it was incredible to see the energy and confidence in the room as students tried new skills and connected directly with mentors.
“Events like this show young women that there’s a place for them in the trades – rewarding, high-demand careers available right here in our region,” says Linthorne.
BWDSB Superintendent of Education Sheryl Elliott adds they are proud many young women took part in the event.
“Experiences like this open doors to excited pathways and demonstrate to students the many exciting and innovative trades related opportunities that are available. Hearing from inspiring industry leaders also helps students see what is possible for their own futures,” says Elliott.
