The Tara Legion is exploring the idea of installing a veterans commemorative crosswalk in town.
Back in September, Branch 383 Public Relations Officer and 36 year Canadian Armed Forces Veteran Stephen McNabb, who served in the regular force and special forces on numerous domestic and international deployments sent a proposal to Arran-Elderslie council to introduce the idea.
McNabb’s proposal says, “This initiative aims to pay tribute to local veterans living in the municipality, along with countless other who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
The Legion wants to put the crosswalk in either of two proposed locations on Yonge Street in Tara, which means it would actually be on Bruce County Road 10. The municipality has said it supports the idea and has contacted Bruce County about it.
McNabb says one option would be to have the crosswalk connect to the cenotaph property, and the other option would be at the crosswalk commonly used as a school crossing at Yonge and Brook Streets.
He says the concept has become increasingly popular among various municipalities as a means to visually acknowledge the sacrifices made by veterans.
“As a veteran, I know how important it is to know that veterans in the community are looked upon as a positive point of view,” says McNabb, who feels Tara is a good place for a veterans crosswalk, adding, “It’s a great little community. They love their veterans.”
McNabb says the crosswalk would also encourage children to remember and honour Canada’s veterans. “Drawing the youth’s attention to the sacrifices made. It can be done all year round.” says McNabb.
