A Hamilton resident faces charges after a Grey Bruce OPP officer was struck during a roadside traffic stop.
Police say on November 5th at about 8:45 p.m., the officer was conducting a traffic stop on Highway 26, near Algonquin Drive in the Municipality of Meaford.
According to OPP, while the officer was dealing with the driver of the vehicle that had been pulled over, an eastbound vehicle clipped the officer with its passenger-side mirror and failed to stop. OPP say the officer sustained minor injuries.
They say they later located and charged a 70-year-old from Hamilton under the Highway Traffic Act failing to report an accident, failing to remain at the scene, careless driving, and failing to slow down and proceed with caution for an emergency vehicle.
OPP are urging drivers to remember Ontario’s move over law.
They say, “When approaching an emergency vehicle stopped with its lights flashing, motorists must slow down and, if safe, move into another lane. This law is designed to protect police, paramedics, tow truck operators, and other roadside workers.”
OPP say failure to comply can result in fines, demerit points, or if someone is hit by a passing vehicle, serious injury or death.
