A spooky circus for a mature audience has rolled into Owen Sound just in time for Halloween.
Paranormal Cirque 4 has set up a big tent in the Heritage Place mall parking lot for the next couple of weeks, on its nationwide tour.
“This is our last city for the entire year,” says professional sword swallower Wendy Blades, who has been a circus performer for about 15 years. Blades says, “I am one of 15 women in the world that swallows swords. What I do is absolutely real. I swallow five swords at once.”
She says there are acrobats, fire breathers, a ‘hair hanger,’ and more. Blades says, “It’s a perfect Halloween treat,” adding they have a haunted house and maze pre-show if you get there about an hour before the performance. “It’s the perfect time of year for us to be doing this show,” she says.
It’s a combination of dark theatre, horror and comedy. The company says it’s not for kids because it has mature content and language, not just spooky or scary content.
“On top of it, you get to see a whole paranormal horror themed circus,” says Blades, who describes the hair hanger’s act as an exorcist themed segment of the show, which involves her being suspended in the air by her hair.
She adds, “There’s fire in the show, there are vampires, there’s a whole magic act,”
She says a lot of performers in the show are from Italy, and one has opera-like performances as well.
“It’s action packed. It’s filled with comedy, cabaret, singing, death defying stunts,” says Blades.

No one under 13 will be admitted. The website says, “Ages 13 to 17 are welcome but at the parent’s discretion. The show has language and material that is not intended for ages under 17.”
