The Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) is holding a new event to introduce young women to skilled trades.
The Built to Lead event is being held on Nov. 5 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the NII Advance Technology Campus in Tiverton and young women in grades seven to 12 from Grey, Bruce and Huron counties are invited to attend.
The event, which is in partnership with the Bluewater District School Board and the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board, will feature over 25 exhibitors in skilled trades ranging from construction, agriculture, and culinary.
NII President and CEO Jessica Linthorne says, “We are really proud to offer this opportunity for young women. It’s important that our girls and young women in the region see they can be in the trades.”
While at the event, Linthorne says young women will be able to try out tools, talk with trades professionals and learn more about local training and apprenticeship opportunities. Additionally, there will be a panel of local tradespeople.
Linthorne adds there is still a disparity between men and women in the trades.
“Recognizing the clean energy future will need a number of trades people, we want to make sure that women have this opportunity,” says Linthorne.
She hopes the new event will become a yearly opportunity to introduce young women to the trades.
