The three United Kingdom men facing charges in the 2023 death of Owen Sound restaurant owner Sharif Rahman have agreed to be extradited to Canada.
Robert Evans is charged with manslaughter in relation to Rahman’s death. His father, Robert Busby Evans, and his uncle and Barry Evans, are charged with accessory after the fact.
All three men appeared at a hearing in Edinburgh Sheriff Court in Scotland earlier this morning, and the CBC reports they consented to extradition. The three will remain in custody until they are sent to Canada for trial.
Rahman was assaulted outside his restaurant The Curry House on 2nd Avenue East in downtown Owen Sound on Aug. 17, 2023 and died one week later — on Aug. 24, 2023 — from injuries he suffered. He was 44-years-old, and left behind a wife and a young daughter.
Courts documents unveiled during the extradition process, which were reported on by the CBC, say Rahman was involved in a confrontation with three men over an unpaid $150 bill outside his restaurant The Curry House on Aug. 17, 2023, and police later found him lying on the ground, seriously injured.
The man charged with manslaughter, Robert Evans, allegedly punched Rahman in the face.
Only two of the three charged in the case were allegedly present at The Curry House; another family member who was dining that evening does not face charges.
The two men charged with accessory after the fact — Barry Evans and Busby Evans — are an uncle and the father of Robert Evans, a past CBC report says. His uncle is alleged to have driven him from the scene after the altercation. While his father arranged a flight and drove him to the airport where he left Canada from after the alleged incident.
The allegations against the three men have not been tested in court.
