The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is launching its fall exhibitions this month.
Gallery Exhibition Assistant Ian Dickey says on Saturday, the gallery opened the Where the Willows Weep and Orchids Dream exhibit by Tara Artist Bianca Nam.
“She creates impressive installations, this one in particular is about orchids and willows. She creates these collages of old National Geographic magazines along with plant matter that she has found and projects them over these willow trees that she has made out of these found branches and wool and yarn,” says Dickey.
The other exhibit, opening Oct. 18, is Convergence, which Dickey says is the first time they are holding a juried exhibition in about a decade.
“It’s a good way to engage local artists and artists across Ontario and we have 26 artists total and 33 works that we will be showing for this exhibition,” says Dickey.
The Where the Willows Weep and Orchids Dream exhibit will run until Jan. 17, while the Convergence exhibit will be available until Jan. 10.
Additionally, the TOM will be carrying over the Tom Thomson exhibit All the Calm and Calamity.
TOM Director and Chief Curator Aidan Ware says, “These exhibitions embody the TOM’s commitment to connecting art, place, and environment through meaningful contemporary expression. They invite visitors to engage with pressing ecological questions while celebrating the creativity and resilience of artists whose work reflects both the beauty and complexity of our natural world.”
The TOM will host an opening reception on Oct. 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. as well as an artist talk with Nam on Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
