A resident of Inverhuron is hoping that the Municipality of Kincardine will consider traffic claiming measures for Victoria Street North.
Marnie O’Neil made her presentation to council on Wednesday, sharing that many motorists need to be reminded that Victoria Street North from Bruce Road 15 to Cayley Street is not only a roadway, but also a pedestrian walkway.
She also said that since the road was recently re-done, more drivers take advantage of the smooth road surface.
“The new paving and the slight widening of the road has made for a perfect straightaway for increased speeds – there [are] no potholes left to slow people down.”
In her original letter to council, O’Neil shared that she and her neighbours wanted the municipality to look into seasonal traffic calming.
She said that while residents along the road have no issue with a lack of a sidewalk, they are still concerned with speeding past their homes.
“In the spring, our road was incorrectly marked at 15 kilometres per hour,” said O’Neil. “It made a significant impact. We observed with a limit of 15 (km/h), drivers would generally drive 25-40. When it was corrected back to 40, people are generally doing 50-60.”
One resident had even gone so far as to creating make-shift speedbumps to slow drivers down, which Mayor Kenneth Craig had to speak out against doing.
Council was concerned with the speeding drivers because of safety issues, and the fact that the remainder of Victoria street south of Bruce Road 15 has a speed limit of 30 km/h, instead of 40 km/h.
The delegation was received as information, giving municipal staff direction to come up with potential solutions at a later date.
