Jacob Therrien did it again.
The 19-year-old forward put a shot high glove past Ben Hrebik to score the lone goal of the shootout and lift the Owen Sound Attack to a 2-1 win over Barrie Colts in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night at Sadlon Arena.
Six days after he scored the overtime winner in the Attack’s season opening win in London, Therrien delivered again in the shootout to help his team to a 2-0 start.
Tristan Delisle scored the lone goal for the Attack in regulation. Brad Gardiner had one for the Colts.
Hrebik starred in the Barrie net. The Attack controlled long stretches of the game – especially during the first two periods – but the Colts netminder turned aside shot after shot. Owen Sound ended up outshooting Barrie 51-24.
“He was amazing,” Attack Head Coach Scott Wray says. “I was literally laughing out loud (on the bench, thinking) it’s going to be one of those. If you coach long enough in this league you see that.”
“I’ve part of it in North Bay a lot and part of it here,” the Attack head coach continues. “It’s just one of those things where now you know what it’s like when guys are going against Carter George all the time and he’s making saves you don’t think he can make.”
Both teams had chances to win it in overtime. Hrebik turned aside a pair of breakaways by Masen Wray. The first one, Wray shot and was stopped. The second, he deked to his backhand but Hrebik made the save moving to his left.
George was quietly solid in the Attack crease in his season debut, after returning from Los Angeles Kings training camp earlier in the week. Gardiner scored on a breakaway with a shot fivehole at 15:57 of the first period to give Barrie a 1-0 lead. That was the last puck that got past George in the game. He denied an Alex Assadourian breakaway in overtime. And he stopped all four shooters he faced in the shootout.
The Attack trailed 1-0 after the first, despite outshooting the Colts 24-7.
Owen Sound tied the game just over six minutes into the second period. Lenny Greenberg let a point-shot go that was deflected by Tristan Delisle to tie the game 1-1.
The goalies took it from there.
George made 23 saves in the win, while Hrebik stopped 50 taking the loss. The Attack outshot the Colts 51-24 while going 0 for 2 on the power play; Barrie finished 0 for 1.
Next up for the Attack (2-0) is the home opener on Saturday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre against the Kitchener Rangers. Game time is 7 p.m. It’s the first game for the Attack at the Bayshore since extensive renovations during the offseason, including new boards, glass and arena slab.
“We can’t wait,” Wray says. “The rink’s phenomenal, looks great.”
