The bill for roof repairs to the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre will be higher than anticipated.
Owen Sound city council will review a report at its meeting next week which includes a request to increase the project budget by about $350,000, to $1.2-million.
The roof rehabilitation project commenced in July at the 10th Street East multi-use facility with two ice pads and a YMCA-operated health, aquatics and fitness centre. A 40,000 square-foot section of the roof is being replaced.
The report to council says the added costs are to address defects in transition walls and the roof access stairwell discovered during renovation, as well as deteriorated roof materials above the pool deck.
“Currently, the project is fully funded from the City’s Canada Community Building Fund Reserve,” Owen Sound’s Manager of Corporate Services Bradey Carbert says in the report. “The additional requested (funds) of $350,000 are also available within this reserve and will not have an impact on projects that are currently funded in the city’s multi-year capital plan.”
The Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre opened in 2012. A past city staff report says the roof system experienced multiple leaks shortly after construction, and there’s been damage to insulation as a result.
The repair project will address the building’s ongoing leaking issues, including the replacement of damaged insulation and the installation of a new membrane which is expected to last 20 years.
