The Bruce County Housing Corporation has purchased the site for a new affordable housing development.
The organization has purchased 1.5 acres of land on Eastridge Road in Walkerton, which will become the site for a 40-unit residential apartment-style development.
Warden Luke Charbonneau praised the move, saying “This is going to be an exciting build for a lot of people, not only in Walkerton, but in the surrounding area.”
His comments came after Deputy Warden Don Murray thanked the Municipality of Brockton for offering the land for the development.
The finalization of the purchase agreement between the BCHC and the Municipality of Brockton took place on Thursday.
The acquisition is a big milestone for the BCHC’s commitment to provide more affordable housing options in the county.
“We’ve identified this need in the inland region,” said Charbonneau “It’s a recognition both on behalf of Brockton and the County, that it is important, and we’re going to do everything we can to combat that problem across our county, and in particular, the inland region.”
The building will have a mixture of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments, and the site could allow for future expansion.
“It’s a fantastic thing. [I’m] looking forward to some reports in the coming months about how we’re going to get shovels in the ground on this thing, and get people living in these new units,” he added.
As part of the agreement, the housing corporation and the Municipality of Brockton are planning to also develop a community-use playground to promote physical activity, encourage social interaction, and support a vibrant community for families.
