Saugeen Shores Police were able to safely apprehend a man under the Mental Health Act with the help of town employees.
Police were called to the Port Elgin Rail Trail, where they found a man who was in a state of crisis, speaking incoherently and acting erratically.
While officers tried to speak with him, he took off. This led to police pursuing the man through backyards, trails, and wooded areas.
Staff members of the Town of Saugeen Shores were able to tell officers where the man had fled, which was near the Port Elgin Cemetery.
Eventually, the pursuit ended up at the edge of Mill Creek. The man removed his clothing and entered the water.
Police then caught up with the man, and de-escalation tactics were used, but were ineffective.
A struggle ensued between police and the man, and a conductive energy weapon was used, and he was then restrained.
Saugeen Shores Fire Department, Paramedics, and additional police resources were used to safely extract the man from the ravine. He was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.
Two officers sustained minor injuries.
