No one was injured in a fire at the Markdale Arena Sunday night.
Grey Highlands Fire Chief Marty Wellwood says fire crews responded to the arena around 6:10 p.m.
“First there was an alarm notification and then the second calls were smoke and flames visible from the back of the building,” says Wellwood.
He says the fire was limited to the Zamboni room at the rear of the arena, however, the rest of the building suffered significant smoke damage.
Crews were on the scene battling the blaze until about 10:30 p.m.
Wellwood says the cause of the fire is still under investigation and does not have a damage estimate as of yet.
“There is significant smoke damage throughout the structure, so it is hard to put a dollar figure on that until we can get right into it and see what is involved,” says Wellwood.
The Municipality of Grey Highlands issued an alert on social media last night saying emergency crews were on the scene.
