Hanover has started a food truck pilot program.
It’s looking to make it easier for food trucks to operate in the community.
The town has designated a few new locations on its property to allow for two trucks at each location. Those include the Town Park and Heritage Square, as well as 612 10th Street by the former Launch Pad building.
Economic Development Manager April Marshall described it in a report to council as, “Enhancing overall appeal and accessibility of diverse dining options by offering choices in our community that really enhances our local culinary scene and then becomes and attraction for residents and visitors.”
Marshall said, “We really want to contribute to that vibrant and inclusive business ecosystem and really give all entrepreneurs opportunity to thrive, and really enhance that foot traffic. We talk about that a lot of downtown but this is also for our public spaces as well.”
The pilot program will run from August to October this year. Food truck operators will be able to sign up in advance for specific locations and days.
A staff report notes, In 2025, the North American food truck market is valued at approximately 4.42 billion (US). Canada is emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets in North America, with a projected growth rate of 6 per cent between 2024 and 2029. This surge is driven by changing consumer preferences, particularly among younger demographics, who value convenience, variety, and unique culinary experiences.
Deputy Mayor Warren Dickert noted during council discussion, “I think it’s a great program to have come to town and looking forward to seeing what kind of variety this might generate for us as far as dining experiences. I guess the very fact that it is a pilot program, any concerns from our existing businesses, the bricks and mortar, will have that opportunity through this process to express any concern they may have and whether it’s pro or con for them.”
He added, “The very nature of the way we’re approaching this I think is good because it allows for that feedback to happen between now and the end of the year.”
